    Northern Dancer
    Bill Hartack Up
    by Fred Stone
Throughout his entire career, Northern Dancer reigned as the Napoleon of Thoroughbreds. Small in stature only, he and his progeny have effectively conquered the racing world.
"Too small," said buyers, passing him over as a yearling. Two years later the 15.2 hand colt became the first Canadian-bred ever to win the Kentucky Derby.
As a stallion he was an instant success. He has sired more than 100 stakes winners, and his name has become synonymous with excellence. The demand for any son or daughter of Northern Dancer is evidenced by the fact that his sales yearlings commanded an average of 5,000, about 10 times the national median.
In 1983 at the Keenland yearling sales in Lexington, Kentucky, a Northern Dancer yearling sold for 10.2 million dollars. In 1990 Northern Dancer died at the age of 29 and is considered by many to be the sire of the century.
Bill Hartack is one of only two jockeys in history to have won five Kentucky Derbys.
