    Description

12# Canister Bottom base plate. Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department, this artillery round is referred to as a Civil War twelve-pound canister. this cylindrical, heavy artillery smoothbore round is filled with twenty-seven 1½” diameter iron balls arranged in four horizontal layers of six balls with three balls vertically at the center.
Most often fired from the bronze Napoleon 12-pounder smoothbore heavy cannon, the canister round was broken by the gun’s discharge and the projectiles spread out into a cone pattern that was very effective against enemy infantry. This  bottom base plate has the cupped indentions that are very desired.
    From the Port Hudson area.
