The Pacific Yew is considered one of the hardest woods of all softwood species. The density of the Yew tends to align more with that of a heavy hardwood yet very flexible and strong. Strength. Yew is strong. The bending strength (MOR) of yew is 15,200 psi, the stiffness is 1.35 million psi, and the hardness is 1600 pounds. For comparison, eastern white pine MOR is 8600 psi, MOE is 1.2 million psi and hardness is 380 pounds.
The wood is dense, hard and strong. It is naturally resistant to insect and fungi attacks. T
he grain is fine, tight and close. The color is orange/brown. The wood does have a luster to it. Yew is odorless and tasteless.
The Pacific Yew grows only in the Pacific Northwest and up into parts of western Canada.  It is a slow growing evergreen tree that reaches only 20 to 40 feet when fully grown.  A hollow yew regenerates itself life long after many other trees would have perished.  The most accurate way to age a tree is by counting the number of annual rings in its trunk. in old yews, the heartwood at their centre begins to decay when they are around 400 years old, leaving them hollow, and making an accurate count of annual rings impossible.
