    Description

    M 1859 VARIATION OF THE  McCLELLAN SADDLE GIRTH ISSUED DURING THE CIVIL WAR.
    I PURCHASED THIS GIRTH MANY YEARS AGO FROM A US CAVALRY COLLECTOR WHO PROVIDED SOME OF THE PICTURES PRINTED IN THE EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK BY DORSEY AND McPHEETERS :
    "THE AMERICAN MILITARY SADDLE 1776-1945"
    THIS PARTICULAR GIRTH IS THE ONE PICTURE ON PAGE 235 FIGURE 4 COMPARING M 1859 GIRTHS. THIS IS THE TOP ONE. IT IS EASY TO IDENTIFY AS IT HAS THE SAME WEAR ON THE RED/BURGUNDY STRIPES. THE WEBBING APPEARS TO BE COTTON AND IS DOUBLE PLY.
    THE BOOK REFERENCE IS THAT IT COULD BE A PRIVATE PURCHASE GIRTH OR PERHAPS A CONFEDERATE SMALL ARSENAL/ CONTRACTOR MANUFACTURED PIECE. THERE IS NO MARKING OF ANY KIND AND EITHER DESCRIPTION COULD BE CORRECT.
    THE LEATHER IS DRY WITH  SURFACE CRAZING BUT IT IS SOUND. SOME AREAS GOING FROM BLACK TO BROWN. THE STICHING IS COMPLETE AND APPEARS TO BE HAND STITCHED. THE WEBBING IS DIRTY AND THE COLORS  FADED.
    NOTE THAT THE HARDWARE IS SURFACE RUSTED BUT FUNCTIONAL.
    A VERY RARE GIRTH WITH DOCUMENTATION TO SUPPORT ITS POSSIBLE ORIGIN.
