An uncommon postcard showing “Giant Trees of California. Mariposa Grove.” Shows the small cabin, so the photo was taken before 1902, with a man seated and a man standing on the porch. 3 wagons are standing in front of the cabin. Published by Rosin & Company (#852). Made in Germany. Mailed in 1908. (See scans of front and back.)
BACKGROUND: The Mariposa Grove Museum marks the site of the original cabin built by Galen Clark soon after he discovered the grove in 1857. The original cabin was destroyed about 30 years later and in 1885 the State Board of Commissioners built a second one on the same site. It housed the curio shop of B. M. Leitch and E. N. Baxter until about 1925. The cabin was enlarged in 1902. In 1930, the National Park Service replaced that cabin with a very similar cabin in appearance and size.
