Description

A very nice and uncommon white border postcard of the California Tunnel Tree “in Mariposa Big Tree Grove, Yosemite Park.” Car in base of tree that is located in the Lower Grove near the Grizzly Giant. Published by Pacific Novelty (#4595). Not mailed or written on. One edge has a very clean cut and it appears they may have been words printed along that top margin. Still, this is a nice image of the lesser known tunnel tree in Yosemite. (See scans of front and back.)
BACKGROUND: Just beyond the Grizzly Giant is the California Tunnel Tree. The tunnel was carved through the tree in 1895 to allow horse-drawn stages to pass through, and you can still walk through the tunnel today. The “tree you can drive through”, the Wawona Tunnel Tree, was further up in the grove, but that tree fell over in the winter of 1968/69.
